What about the rates of vaping or nicotine pouches? It’s possible the decline in the traditional combustion methods of nicotine ingestion have been replaced with a more direct route.
An excellent point Mr. Kocher. Some quick research finds that use of any tobacco product by high schoolers in last thirty days in 2023 was about 11-12%, mostly e-cigs at around 10%, the 1.9% with combustion cigs (reported in the data above) and very small percentages from smokeless tobacco pods etc. Not being a smoker myself,I took the data regarding smoking at 1.9% at face value. Nonetheless I don’t think it changes my conclusion as smoking rate has dropped in this age group from 37% in 1980 to current level. Also e-cig use is reported to be dropping in last 2-3 years from 13 to 10%. We don’t have data long term to assess whether vaping carries as much risk for cancer as regular cig smoking—it could easily be much less.
